Kyneton Racecourse, known as the prettiest racecourse in Victoria, offers all the excitement of racing in a relaxed country setting. It is the home of the Kyneton and Hanging Rock Racing Club. The Club hosts 15 race dates over the year, two of which are held at the Hanging Rock Racecourse. The most famous of these is undoubtedly the Kyneton Cup, which is part of Victoria’s Spring Racing Carnival. It attracts 6 000 visitors each year including people from interstate and overseas. The Kyneton Cup is particularly popular with locals who have a public holiday on the race day and many in the region attend the event.
The most striking thing about the Kyneton Racecourse is the 100-year-old Elm trees that line the track and set it apart from other courses in the state. We spoke to Lisa Evans, the Operations Manager at the Club, and she said that the Racecourse offers ‘relaxed country racing’ and a beautiful venue to ‘socialise with family and friends’. Becoming a member of the club is only $110 per year and offers great value for both avid visitors and locals.
The Kyneton and Hanging Rock Racing Club also support locals by hosting other events. They have held the Lost Trades Fair for the past six years and regularly oversee functions for Kyneton Football and Netball Club.
If you visit the track in the early morning you will see horses being trained there in the crisp Kyneton air. For the benefit of the racing addicts, the track is 1660 metres in circumference with a straight of 250 metres. It usually retains its excellent condition and favours horses who like to lead. The only other tip we offer is that you head out to Kyneton Racecourse to experience one of the racing days for yourself! It will no doubt be one to remember.
